‘The Drum‘

At the end of April 2023 we held an event to celebrate the installation of a memorial to mark the life and work of John Scott, poet and builder of the Grotto.
The event was well attended, the Town Mayor, local councillors, and many people who work to maintain and steward the Grotto gave of their time to attend and make the afternoon a success.
David Perman, our local historian and instigator of the Grotto restoration back in 1990, gave a reading of Scott’s poem ‘The Drum’ around which the memorial is designed.

At the end of July in 2021 we were at long last able to reopen the Grotto following lockdown due to Covid-19.
We welcomed the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters who transformed Scott’s Grotto into an enchanted wonderland.
For two weeks we were open every day and welcomed almost 4,500 visitors whilst raising £8,000 for the Samaritans and the Grotto.
